Motion Collabs is an ongoing collaborative project welcoming creatives from all over the world. During this collaboration, participants worked together in small groups to seamlessly transition their sections with one another. See the whole music video here! This type of project is an excellent opportunity for motion designers to flex their creative muscles without having clients looking over their shoulders. Sweet freedom anchored within real deadlines!
FINAL ANIMATION for our section

"Team Cyan" : Four creatives working on this 27 seconds section of the song.

MY TEAM
01:00 - 01:13 secs
Illustrations: Anne Saint-Louis
Animation: Marc Hobelman
01:13 - 01:27 secs
Illustrations + character animation: Cristina Pina
Animation: Jaume Sastre
The six four-people teams for the whole music video were randomly organized. My team (Team Cyan) was composed of Cristina as group leader based in Lisbon, Jaume from Barcelona, Marc from San Diego, and myself from Vancouver Canada. A truly international cooperation! After salutations, we decided to create teams within the team to delegate tasks. Because of sharing the same timezone (so useful in timely communication!) Cristina collaborated with Jaume for part 2, and myself and Marc took on part 1 of the section. We shared same colour palette and brainstormed together the stories and how the parts would link up.
MOODBOARDS
First off, we needed a moodboard! What's a 70s kind of vibe we are looking to communicate? Each of us proposed some images to get the creative juices flowing. A big inspiration was the classic Number 12 Sesame Street animation. As Cristina loves animating dogs, we decided that a disco dog had to be featured too! The main concept is of a ball travelling in a landscape of giant musical instruments, gaining sparkles along the way. The hero ball, becoming a shining disco ball, ends up falling downwards through music notes and instruments and settling over a dancing, cocktail slurping, sparkly dancing dog. What's not to like?
ANIMATIC PART 1
After some back and forth with the team and lots of sketching, I created an animatic for first part to help direct our efforts. This is an important step to help figure out the beats in the song and how scenes could flow. Cristina and Jaume took care of creating an animatic for second part.

The blaring horns transitions didn't make the final cut! Otherwise, we didn't stray from original concept.

DESIGN BOARDS
Using the moodboard as stylistic inspiration, I drew the artwork in Illustrator and prepped everything, clearly labeled and layered, for Marc to animate in After Effects. This is not my usual illustrative style, but I had a lot of fun creating these designs nonetheless!
